What is a spiral binding or ring binding for brochures?
In spiral binding, the individual pages are first punched along the binding edge and then joined together with a wire binding. We refer to this method as wire-spiral binding or Wire-O binding.
The terms ‘spiral binding’, ‘Wire-O binding’ and ‘ring binding’ are frequently used in brochure printing to refer to this type of binding. Wire-O binding consists of a moulded wire loop that is threaded through the pre-punched holes.
How Wire-O binding works
The pages are perforated along the binding edge and then bound together using wire. Unlike with adhesive binding, this does not create a solid spine. This makes ring-bound brochures particularly practical when pages are frequently opened and used.
How long can a spiral-bound booklet be?
Depending on the paper and format, we can produce wire-spiral bindings of up to 300 pages. For DIN A3 landscape, up to 75 pages are possible, with a maximum length of 60 cm.
Spiral binding or another type of binding – which is best for your brochure?
Not every brochure requires the same binding. The number of pages, intended use and desired appearance are key factors – which is why it’s worth comparing our other binding options.

Wire stitching
The classic solution for compact brochures. The pages are stapled along the spine, resulting in a slim printed product that is well suited to company information, product presentations, events or marketing materials.
Typical of: Information, product and event leaflets

Adhesive binding
With adhesive binding, the pages are firmly glued to the cover along the spine. This produces a sturdy booklet with a closed spine – ideal for longer texts.
Typical of: Product catalogues, annual reports and comprehensive company brochures

Hardcover
With hardback binding, the brochure is given a sturdy cover and takes on the appearance of a book. It is particularly suitable for high-quality and prestigious content.
Typical of: High-quality presentations, case studies, and corporate communications

Softcover
With softcover binding, a flexible cover encloses the inner pages and forms a closed spine. It is particularly suitable for high-quality, book-like brochures.
Typical of: Corporate, image and presentation brochures

Calendar binding
With calendar binding, the pages are bound in such a way that they are easy to turn and suitable for regular use. It is particularly suitable for calendars, planners and overviews.
Typical of: Calendars, planners, overviews

FAQ – Having a spiral-bound brochure printed
In a spiral-bound brochure, perforated pages are bound together using a wire binding. WENZEL uses wire spiral bindings, also known as Wire-O bindings, for this purpose. This makes it easy to open the pages and turn them.
Wire-stapling produces a slim, easy-to-leaf-through finish and is particularly suitable for compact brochures. For very large printed materials, however, a different binding method, such as perfect binding, may be more appropriate.
Above all, spiral binding offers a very flexible opening and turning action. Unlike adhesive binding, there is no solid spine to restrict how far the book can be opened. It is therefore particularly suitable for documents that are used or referred to regularly.
The advantages include ease of use, good binding performance and suitability for commonly used materials. However, the visible wire binding is a deliberate design feature that defines the product’s appearance. Those who would prefer a closed, book-like spine instead can opt for adhesive or softcover binding, for example.

The turnaround time depends on the format, print run, volume, paper and finish. We also offer express production. In Munich, our in-house courier service is also available.
As well as spiral binding, other options include wire-stapling, adhesive binding, softcover and hardcover. The choice of binding depends primarily on the number of pages, intended use and desired appearance.
When designing, particular attention must be paid to ensuring there is sufficient space at the binding edge for perforation and binding. For printed products that are to be bound, we recommend a margin of 2 to 2.5 cm at the binding edge. Print files should always be provided as print-ready PDF files.
