What is a hardback booklet?

Unlike softcover bindings, a hardcover brochure has a rigid cover. The front and back covers protect the inner pages and give the printed product a high-quality, book-like appearance.

At WENZEL, you can choose from a range of hardback brochures. The „Deluxe“ hardback is handcrafted with sturdy cardboard front and back covers. Alternatively, the „Standard“ hardback version is available with a clamped binding.

What sort of content is hardback suitable for?

Hardback is particularly suitable for more extensive or particularly prestigious content that is intended to be presented to a high standard and used over a longer period. This includes, for example, corporate presentations, annual reports, documentation, and high-quality product and reference brochures.

Wire stitching

The classic solution for compact brochures. The pages are stapled along the spine, resulting in a slim printed product that is well suited to company information, product presentations, events or marketing materials.

Typical of: Information, product and event leaflets

Wire-O / Spiral binding

With Wire-O binding, the pages are held together by a wire spiral. This makes it particularly suitable for content that is frequently opened and used, such as training materials, presentation documents or work documents.

Typical of: Training courses, presentations, reference works

Stacked brochures with PUR adhesive binding, including a doctoral thesis with a blue spine

Adhesive binding

With adhesive binding, the pages are firmly glued to the cover along the spine. This produces a sturdy booklet with a closed spine – ideal for longer texts.

Typical of: Product catalogues, annual reports and comprehensive company brochures

FAQ – Having a hardback brochure printed

A hardcover booklet has a rigid cover that encloses and protects the inner pages. This gives the printed product a particularly sturdy, book-like appearance.

The cover, spine and inside pages should be planned together from the outset. Important content must be placed at a sufficient distance from the margins and the binding. For bound printed products, we recommend a margin of 2 to 2.5 cm at the binding edge; for design elements that extend to the edge, the bleed specifications also apply.

The exact dimensions of the hardback cover should be agreed with the chosen publisher before the final cover file is produced.

The main difference lies in the binding: hardback books have a rigid cover, whilst softback books have a flexible cover. This makes hardback books appear more sturdy and prestigious; softback books are lighter and more flexible. Our softback books have a wraparound cover, similar to that of a paperback.

DIN A4 and DIN A5 are versatile formats for hardback publications; however, the best format depends on the content. We offer a choice of DIN A4, DIN A5 and DIN A3, as well as portrait and landscape formats.

The choice of paper depends on the content, the number of pages and the desired feel. Publications with a high proportion of images may have different requirements to annual reports or extensive documentation. WENZEL offers a range of papers for digital printing, including various grammages, and can advise on the selection.

You can design the cover, format, paper and content to suit your project and then send us the print files. If you need assistance, our graphics and layout service can also take care of the design and preparation of the print files.

Yes, we produce brochures and bespoke printed materials, even in small print runs. For details of the specific hardback design and the required quantity, we recommend that you make an individual enquiry.

Whether express production is possible depends on the hardback finish selected and the size of the order. The more elaborately crafted WENZEL „Deluxe“ hardback is handmade and has a production time of 1 to 3 working days.

In thread stitching, folded printed sheets are bound together with thread to form individual sections, which are then assembled into a book block. This type of binding is particularly durable and can be combined with a hardback cover.
