What does „flame-retardant“ mean?

The technical term „flame-retardant“ refers to materials that fall within building material class B1 in accordance with DIN 4102. Materials in this class are difficult to ignite at normal temperatures. Classification in this class can only be achieved if the material has been tested and classified by an accredited institute. There are also the additional classifications „B2“ (normally flammable) and „B3“ (easily flammable). Where the highest level of safety is required, materials in fire protection class A1 are used. A1 refers to building materials that are non-combustible.

What are the potential applications for flame-retardant fabrics?

The use of B1-certified materials in public buildings is required by law under the fire safety standard. Fire safety regulations minimise the risk of a fire starting and spreading, thereby ensuring that people inside the buildings are better protected. The use of flame-retardant materials gives visitors, guests and children the time they need to leave the building safely in an emergency.
