Photo with a mat in an elegant frame
A print with a mat and an elegant frame is something truly special. The photo isn’t just hung on the wall; it takes on a very elegant air and enhances the wow factor. A passe-partout is a piece of cardboard that is inserted into a frame with a glass front. We use a standard width of 4 cm, but other widths can also be produced without any problem (please feel free to contact us).
The mat within the frame creates „distance“ and clarity
The mat used creates „space“ between the print and the frame. In other words, the print does not fill the entire frame, but only a section of it. This not only provides visual clarity but also offers practical advantages: the print and the front glass do not come into contact, which is ideal for conservation purposes (both for prints on, for example, handmade paper, and for watercolours, etc.).
Focus on the subject
Put another way, a mat draws the eye to the centre – that is, to the subject itself – and creates a sense of „calm“ around the photograph, ensuring the viewer is not distracted. Furthermore, the passe-partout is cut at an angle inwards, lending the image a sense of „depth“. Thanks to modern cutting techniques, the mitre (i.e. the cut corner) can be produced to perfection and is a visual delight.
A variety of mat and frame colours
You can choose from a wide range of frame colours. If the frame colour you’re looking for isn’t listed, simply get in touch with us – we’ll be happy to help. You can also choose from various finishes for the passe-partouts; natural white or other colours are available on request. The same applies, of course, to the formats. However, you are also welcome to order special formats on request, e.g. square or other irregular shapes.
Fine paper for the mat
Naturally, we don’t just use any old paper for printing this high-quality item. We use Sihl Masterclass Baryta, with a basis weight of 290 g/m². On the one hand, the colours on this paper are rich and vibrant; on the other, it is precisely this combination with the elegant frames and the passe-partout that makes it something truly special.
How is the size of the mat calculated?
You can choose from a range of sizes for the passe-partout. For this product, simply subtract 4 cm from all sides of the final size (e.g. 50 x 70 cm). This means that the visible part – your photo – will measure 42 x 62 cm. To allow us to finish the print, we require a 0.5 cm bleed all round. We currently offer black, glossy frames (Nielsen Alpha black glossy) with a natural white passe-partout; we’d be happy to calculate a quote for you on request. Any questions?
